Carnatic vocal music is one of the oldest forms of South Indian classical music, with a rich tradition shaped by centuries of composers, musicians, and teachers. Centered around melody, rhythm, and improvisation, it has been passed down through generations and continues to evolve across the world. Today, Ninaad hopes to preserve and grow this tradition by creating opportunities for young vocalists to learn, perform, and share their music with the community.

Violin
The violin is a versatile string instrument with origins in Europe, developing into its modern form in Italy during the 16th century. Over time, it spread across the world and became an important instrument in many musical traditions, including Indian classical music. In Carnatic music, the violin was adapted to complement the voice and became a central instrument for accompanying vocalists and performing independently. Today, Ninaad hopes to continue encouraging young musicians to learn, perform, and share this beautiful instrument with their communities.

Mridangam
The mridangam is a traditional South Indian percussion instrument with roots dating back centuries. Made with a hollow wooden body and two playing surfaces, it is known for its rich range of tones and rhythmic complexity. It became a central instrument in Carnatic music, accompanying vocalists and instrumentalists while providing the rhythmic foundation for performances. Today, Ninaad hopes to encourage young musicians to learn, perform, and carry this important musical tradition forward.

Performance Training Alumni
Ninaad’s Performance Training Program gave young artists the opportunity to learn and grow under accomplished musicians Kruthi Vittal and Vittal Rangan, who taught participants a variety of Carnatic vocal pieces and instrumental accompaniments. Participants were divided into two groups, with both groups including vocalists, violinists, and mridangists. Group 1 focused on foundational yet unique pieces for beginner musicians, while Group 2 explored more advanced compositions and performance pieces. Through this program, Ninaad continues its mission of creating meaningful opportunities for young artists to learn, perform, and grow within the Carnatic music community.
